An equine pre-purchase examination, also known as a (PPE), is a veterinary evaluation of a horse to assess its overall health and fitness before a purchase. PEAK VETS offers a comprehensive and thorough pre-purchase examination which seeks to provide you (the purchaser) with all the information required to make an informed decision on the horses’ suitability for your intended use.
Here are some common components of a PPE:
Physical Examination: The veterinarian will conduct a thorough physical examination of the horse, including:
- Inspection of the horse’s overall condition, including body condition score, muscle tone, and joint health
- Flexion, trot up, soundness and behavioural evaluation during the appointment
- Palpation of the horse’s abdomen, including assessment of the gastrointestinal system
- Evaluation of the horse’s dental health, including assessment of teeth wear and alignment
Diagnostics: The following diagnostics can be performed in addition to the standard PPE:
- Radiography, ultrasound, endoscopy & bloodwork
Post examination, the vet will call you to discuss the findings of the exam and you will also receive a detailed written report.
Pre purchase exams can be performed on farm or at our clinics, depending on the type of exam you select. For multiple diagnostics we may ask that the horse is floated to our clinic.
