In-house Pathology
🐴 Our In-House Pathology Lab: Fast, Accurate Testing for Your Horse's Health
At our in-house pathology lab, we conduct a variety of tests both in-clinic and on-farm, ensuring quick and accurate blood testing for effective diagnosis and health monitoring of your horse. From routine check-ups to critical care, our comprehensive blood analysis helps us make informed treatment decisions.
🩺 Common Tests We Offer:
Complete Blood Count (CBC):
Examines both red and white blood cells, providing insight into overall health. 🩸Biochemistry Blood Analysis:
Evaluates key markers such as the kidneys, liver, electrolytes, and inflammatory proteins for a full picture of your horse's internal health. 🧬IgG (Immunoglobulin G) Test:
Crucial for newborn foals, this test checks if they've received enough maternal antibodies to fight infections. Must be performed at 24 hours of age to ensure proper immunity. 🍼💉SAA (Serum Amyloid A):
A sensitive marker of inflammation. This test can detect acute inflammation or infections, and it's available on-farm for rapid results and timely treatment. ⚡️Cytology:
Commonly used for diagnosing skin, ear, and eye infections. 🐾👁️
🔬 Specialized Testing
If more specialized testing is needed, such as histopathology for biopsies or lumps, or specific tests for conditions like Equine Metabolic Syndrome or Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (Equine Cushings), we can send samples to external laboratories for advanced analysis. 🧪
Ultrasound
🩺 Ultrasound: A Key Diagnostic Tool for Equine Health
Ultrasound is an essential diagnostic tool for evaluating soft tissues such as muscles, tendons, ligaments, and internal organs, including reproductive organs. It provides a clear view of internal structures without the need for surgery or invasive procedures. At PEAK VETS, we use high-resolution portable ultrasound machines, allowing our vets to perform ultrasound examinations both in clinic and on farm. This flexibility enables us to quickly assess your animal’s condition and provide timely treatment. 🐴📊
Key Uses of Ultrasound on Our Equine Patients:
Lameness Exams:
Ultrasound allows for non-invasive imaging of soft tissue structures, including tendons and ligaments. 🦵Reproduction:
We can monitor the ovaries and uterus, detect pregnancy early, and assess the health of the foetus. Ultrasound also helps identify issues like ovarian cysts, uterine infections, or pregnancy abnormalities. 🐴Colic:
Abdominal ultrasound assists in assessing severe colic cases and determining the best course of treatment—whether surgical or medical management.
🔧 Property Requirements:
For reproductive exams on mares, an equine crush is required to ensure the safety of both our patients and staff. This secure environment minimizes risks and ensures effective examinations. If you do not have an equine crush, please inform our team, and our vet will bring the portable crush with them. 🏠
X-Rays
🖼️ Advanced Digital X-Ray Technology for Your Horse’s Health
Our advanced digital X-ray technology provides clear, high-quality images of your horse’s skeletal system, helping diagnose fractures, joint issues, arthritis, and more. This non-invasive procedure allows us to identify problems with precision, ensuring the right treatment plan. 🐴💡
With our portable X-ray machine, our vets can capture detailed images in clinic and on your property. Radiographs are invaluable for lameness evaluations, pre-purchase exams, dental evaluations, and emergency situations. 🚑🩻
⚙️ Property Requirements:
To perform diagnostic radiographs at your property, it’s important to ensure you have a suitable area for the procedure. Do you have the following?
Power:
Our machine must be plugged into a main power source or a suitable generator. 🔌⚡Concrete / Covered Area:
An undercover concrete area is ideal for performing radiographs. If you don’t have this, please let our team know, and we will come up with a suitable plan. 🏠🔧
